John Lee Bonner is a composer, conductor, and church musician based in Houston, Texas. His work is rooted in the belief that music has the power to build community, deepen faith, and tell meaningful stories.
John holds a Bachelor of Science in Music from Eastern New Mexico University, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from West Texas A&M University, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from West Texas A&M University.
John currently serves as Director of Music Ministries at Grace in the Heights United Methodist Church, where he leads choral and instrumental ministries. Known for his collaborative leadership style and commitment to musical excellence, he works with singers and instrumentalists of all backgrounds to create engaging and meaningful artistic experiences in worship.
As a composer, John's music explores themes of faith, hope, identity, and human connection. His works have been performed by school, church, community, and collegiate ensembles, and his music is available through J.W. Pepper.
John remains actively engaged in several large-scale creative projects. He is currently composing Requiem for My Mother, a major work for double choir and organ exploring grief, memory, and love, and is developing dear God, an original musical that examines the intersection of faith, identity, and belonging through the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals navigating life within religious communities.
Prior to his work in Houston, John spent more than a decade as a music educator and conductor, leading award-winning choral programs across Texas. His ensembles consistently earned superior ratings and were recognized for both artistic achievement and community engagement. These experiences continue to shape his approach to leadership, collaboration, and music-making today.
In addition to composing and conducting, John provides music engraving, arranging, editing, and consulting services for composers, churches, and educational organizations. Whether preparing a publication-ready score, leading a rehearsal, or writing a new work, he is passionate about helping others bring music to life.
When he is not conducting or composing, John enjoys crafting, cheering on the Houston Astros, and spending time with his cats, Brahms and Phoebe.
